Woman dancing in a blur Using Movement and Dance as Therapy

This CPD workshop, available in Whitstable, is aimed at counsellors, psychotherapists and others working in helping professions.

  • A highly interactive and practical workshop.

Course Details

The health benefits of movement and dance have come under rigorous scrutiny this past decade so we have a growing body of evidence on how the elements in dance: sociability, aerobic exercise, rhythmic activity, physical touch and music, combine to bring about measurable and sustainable positive change in mood, stress levels, anxiety, depression and body image.

We also know more about the potential for catharsis particularly where dance is created, rehearsed and performed (i.e.where it is an expressive arts activity in which feelings are communicated non-verbally and witnessed by an audience).

We can articulate more precisely the difference between the way dance as a performing art form brings about therapeutic outcomes in contrast to dance movement therapy as a branch of the arts therapies.

Because of advances in neuroscience we also know that dance can stem the decline in cognitive functioning in older adults particularly where sequences of dance choreography are being fixed in somatic memory.

  • This will be a partly practical day with the focus on discovering the accessibility and power of movement and dance: absolutely no previous experience is necessary! The practical elements will be linked to current theoretical understandings.
  • The course is aimed at anybody who is curious about the power of movement and dance to improve wellbeing and mental health.
  • Pauline Gladstone-Barrett has recently retired from a long career focused on the benefits of the arts (and theatre and dance in particular) within education, criminal justice and social welfare settings. Pauline is also a member of a contemporary dance company of elders based in Kent.
