About Iron Mill - Why choose us?

WHY CHOOSE IRON MILL?

Training
* Our training programmes cover a wide range of theories and are constantly updated to keep up with current theories and legislation. The majority of programmes are accredited by a National or European body that is recognised in the profession.

Professional Registration
* The training programmes are designed to meet the requirements of the relevant professional bodies to allow candidates to complete their professional registration. These bodies include BACP, UKCP and EAS. Details of these bodies can be found in the FAQ section of this website or by visiting their website (please click on the links above).

Quality

* Our professional training is delivered by experienced practioners and teachers all bringing their own unique portfolio of skills to the programme. Our reputation has been built over several decades and graduates have great success when entering the profession. Our quality standards are carefully monitored both internally and externally by our accrediting bodies and through our partnerships with Strode College and the University of Worcester.

Location / Building

* We are located in the centre of Exeter in the heart of the South West. Exeter is accessible by all transport links including bus, rail and air. We have students who travel from all over the UK to undertake our training. The institute is based in a beautiful historic building and has three comfortable teaching rooms (two with breakout areas) all with drinks facilities.  The office is based on site and it has a resources room, including the library, located right next door to it.

Part-time training
*All of our training is available part-time and is normally available one day per week or one weekend a month. This enables you to fit the courses around any work commitments.

Taster days
*We offer taster days for all the longer training as we understand the commitment needed to complete a programme of this type. The taster day allows you to sample what we can offer and the cost of the taster day is deducted from your course fees should you wish to continue. These days are also useful in the own right and you will leave with some new tools even if you decide not to continue onto further training.

101 Introductory Workshops
*In addition to the Taster days outlined above we also have two-day Introduction workshops for the four main training areas, Counselling, TA Psychotherapy, Supervison and Coaching. These are more in-depth workshops that in some cases form part of the training hours (TA Psychotherapy & Coaching) of the programme and will be a requirement of the course.

TRAINING METHODS

Adult learners bring with them a whole raft of experience from their personal and professional lives, and experiences of learning when younger. For this reason we provide a range of training methods including didactic teaching, exercises and experiential learning to make concrete some of the theoretical taught content. Students are expected to keep learning journals so that there can be time for reflection; in addition we engage in active experimentation and live supervision and question and answer sessions. There are tutorials and group discussions and opportunities to explore and experiment, practice new skills and integrate new ideas into existing professional and personal expertise.

It is clear some people learn by activity, others by applying theory to practice, others by reflective learning and yet others by making sense of the theory. All of these approaches are reflected in the programmes. In addition for those who are visual learners, there is ample opportunity to work creatively with visual material, for others, the hands on approach is encouraged and for those who are attuned to the subtleties of language, our teachers and trainers are well versed in a good command of language and clarity of concepts. We have had a number of dyslexic colleagues over the years who have achieved great success, and whose expertise has helped the tutors understand and respond to their situation with care and support.
