For people interested in developing a theoretical and experiential understanding of the practice of dramatherapy. Participants may have an interest in pursuing training in dramatherapy, or regard the course as a means of enriching their present personal or professional development. Participants need have no prior knowledge of the subject of dramatherapy.

Workshop Description

This introductory course aims to give basic knowledge of a person-centred approach to dramatherapy, integrating theory & practice through the methods of experiential workshop, lecture and group discussion. A group contract will be drawn up at the beginning of the work to ensure safe sharing of personal material.
The principles and practice of dramatherapy, including: -

1. What is dramatherapy? General overview of the intention of dramatherapy, what a dramatherapist is and what they do.
2. The creating and fostering of safety and trust, to enable personal exploration and learning to take place.
3. An experience of a variety of ways in which a dramatherapist might work, including an introduction to a specific approach to dramatherapy.
4. An understanding of the value and use of metaphor and aesthetic distance.
5. The differences between therapeutic drama and dramatherapy, and between dramatherapy and psychodrama.

(A concise, current overview of dramatherapy – only 164 pages. It is recommended this is read prior to attending the course.)

Mary Booker will be the lead facilitator on the course. She has been practicing dramatherapy in Exeter and the Southwest since 1988. Being involved with training dramatherapists since 1990, she promotes an eclectic approach which encourages student dramatherapists to develop their own way of working. As well as her dramatherapy qualification and experience, Mary has a masters degree in special education and a post graduate diploma in psychodrama psychotherapy. She provides clinical supervision for both individual therapists and teams, and is a British Association of Dramatherapists approved supervisor. BA, MEd, HPC registered Dramatherapist, PG Dip Psychodrama Psychotherapy.

John Hazlet Dickinson will introduce the “Sesame” approach to dramatherapy.
He works in group and individual dramatherapy with adults and young people in education and psychiatric settings. John has experience of working with people on the autistic spectrum, people diagnosed with psychosis, OCD and with emotional and behavioural difficulties. He also specialises in working alongside clients with self-esteem and self-image concerns. Dip Community Arts (degree status), MA, HPC Reg Dramatherapist.
