Join Karen as she looks at the theme of recovery from trauma and alienation in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy. The workshop will have a particular focus on how to recover from trauma located in oppression and systems of dependency. Karen will also be looking at loss in the context of traumatic experiences and the role of love in the social lives of our clients, as well as in the consulting room.

The workshop is relevant for anyone interested in social, cultural and political perspectives in counselling and psychotherapy, and the way in which contemporary theory is considering the importance of social context. It will be of interest to practitioners who want to understand more about recovering from power dynamics such as coercive control and gaslighting, and who wish to gain some fresh perspectives on their work with clients.

The workshop will cover clinical, social and philosophical themes, and Karen will also offer case examples and present ideas from her current book on Alienation. There will be a combination of theory presentation, case examples, reflective exercises, and opportunities for question and discussion.

Participants are invited to come with examples from their practice, as well as some reflections on their particular social and cultural background.
