Iron Mill College - FREE Public Lectures, Winter 2017

FREE Public Lectures are returning to Iron Mill College for Winter 2017! The latest FREE lecture series will be open to anyone who would like the chance to learn more about intriguing topics and gain insight into some fantastic mental health and wellbeing training on offer at Iron Mill College.

'Eating Disorders: The Season of Excess' (Exeter - 9th November 2017)

The first lecture  is "Eating Disorders: The Season of Excess" at Iron Mill College in Exeter at 6.30pm on Thursday 9th November 2017. It will be delivered by Dr Julie Waumsley, who holds a specialist interest in working with those who struggle with their relationship toward food and whose experience includes work with the BPS and government on obesity issues. This fascinating lecture won’t pull any punches in acknowledging the distressing aspects of Bulimia Nervosa, recognising that the Christmas Season is a particularly difficult time for those suffering with Eating Disorders. It will be delivered in a respectful, sensitive and open manner and offer the opportunity for questions.

In addition, the lecture will offer attendees the opportunity to find out what studying on Iron Mill College's forthcoming
Post Qualifying Diploma in Eating Disorders: Brain, Body and Mind, starting in February 2018 in Exeter, will be like.

'The Joys and Challenges of Counselling Children and Young People' (Poole - 18th November 2017; Exeter - 20th November 2017)

How does the counsellor approach their work? What happens in a counselling session? What feelings, hopes, joys and thoughts are left over at the end of the day? This lecture, by Delena Ritter and Marilyn McGowan, will offer a unique opportunity to see the young client and their world from the perspective of the counsellor. This lecture is part of the Iron Mill College Poole Official Opening event, which starts at 11am on Saturday 18th November 2017. Marilyn McGowan will also deliver this lecture in Exeter, at 6.30pm on Monday 20th November 2017.

This lecture will be of particular interest to those thinking of applying for our Post Qualifying Diploma in Counselling Children & Adolescents, starting in Poole in February 2018 and in Exeter in April 2018, or our Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (validated by University of Worcester), starting in Poole in October 2018. It will also help serve as a preview for 'Promoting Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing in Young People: We are hearing but are we really listening?', our wonderful 1 day conference in Poole in April 2018.

'The Counsellor and the Community' (Poole - 18th November 2017)

This lecture, also part of the Iron Mill College Poole Official Opening event, is inspired by the work of Adler and Social Interest. It will explore the importance of community to the counsellor and will be delivered by Wendy Anne Goddard. Wendy has been a local counsellor for the past 20 years and founded the local charity the Listening Ear to develop counselling in school communities.

Those interested in our
Certificate in Counselling (Quality Checked by NCS), starting in Poole in February and April 2018, or our Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling (BACP Accredited), starting in Poole in May 2018, may be especially interested in this talk.

'Magician or Fool? The importance of being playful within the therapeutically reparative relationship' (Exeter - 5th December; Poole 7th December)

The final talk in our Winter lecture series, will be with the fantastic Sean Flynn and will give an insight into the forthcoming intakes of our Post Qualifying Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies, beginning in both Exeter and Poole in February 2018. This lecture explores the value of being playful as a therapist. Even when the ‘rules’ of a game are clearly defined, a skilful player is able to be surprisingly spontaneous.

This inspiring lecture will take place at 6.30pm on Tuesday 5th December 2017 in Exeter and on Thursday 7th December 2017 in Poole.
